Weekend Challenge: Run a mile

Something I thought would be fun and new for this blog is a weekend challenge posted each Friday. For the first challenge, I figured, hey, why not run a mile? I have a love/hate relationship with running. I have to force myself out the door almost every time I run, but I’m always glad I went. I’ve never said, “That was a bad idea.”

You are welcome to alter this weekend challenge to match your physical abilities.1 If that means you walk instead of run, have at it. If you can only run half and need to walk the remaining distance, all good. Chop it up however you see fit. If you’re a seasoned runner and want to do more than a mile, set it for 3, 5, or 10 miles (or more).

Measuring a mile

Not sure how far a mile is on foot? There’s all sorts of apps out there to guide you. I’ve used Runkeeper for years and have no desire to switch. There’s a free version and a paid version (premium). The free version has everything you need starting out, including audio prompts for distance. That way you’ll know when you’re halfway done with your mile and can turn around.

Prefer a different app? verywell has a list of the best running apps of 2023. Coincidentally, Runkeeper wins Best Overall.

Sharing your weekend challenge

If you do this challenge, snap a photo of yourself or the scenery around you (whatever catches your eye) and share it on social media as #weekendchallenge and link to this post. You can even preemptively share it on social media to keep yourself accountable and invite others to join the challenge. Lastly, if you do the challenge and want to let me know, scroll down to the comments and drop your social media link in where it says, “Website.”

Rules

There are none. Make it fun. Have your spouse tag along, or your kids or your dog.
